Essential Seasonal HVAC Maintenance Tips for Texas Homeowners
Texas doesn't have four distinct HVAC seasons. What it has is a long demanding cooling season, a brief fall transition, a mild winter, and a short spring window before the heat returns. Here is what to do during each window.
Spring โ March to April (Most Important)
- Schedule your professional AC tune-up before temperatures climb and schedules fill
- Replace your air filter โ start the season fresh
- Clear the outdoor condenser unit of debris from winter
- Test the thermostat before the first hot week
- Pour diluted bleach into the condensate drain access to slow algae growth
Summer โ May to September
- Check filters monthly โ summer clogs them faster than any other season
- Watch for the afternoon-shutdown pattern โ almost always a drain clog
- Keep outdoor unit clear after storms
- Don't ignore new sounds โ buzzing, grinding, rattling all signal problems

Fall โ October to November
- Schedule a heating system check before the first cold snap
- Check electrical connections โ summer heat loosens wires
- Replace filters again for fall allergen season
Winter โ December to February
- Keep outdoor unit clear of ice during rare freeze events โ don't chip ice, let it thaw
- Schedule any deferred maintenance โ availability is high in winter
